Talma Wrap & Bonnet, c. 1880s

Wrap is the Truly Victorian #500 "Talma Wrap," to be made in brocade, lined with cotton and interlined with cotton flannel. Trimmed with fringe, and buttons still to be purchased. Will use a combination of hand and machine stitching. Bonnet will be a copy of an antique one in my collection, to be made in black velvet.

I was getting quite excited about this project, and even though I don't have fabric and such yet, I do have the antique bonnet, and so I began taking measurements and figuring out how I will go about copying it. I made a little mock-up which turned out quite well. I plan to make the final bonnet in velvet, like the original, and for trimmings I will look out for appropriate little flowers, and since my original has neat jet ornaments, I'm going to try to find something with the same look to use as well.

Today my fabric for the "Talma Wrap" arrived. I've chosen a black-on-black brocade (which can be seen below), and I hope to find some appropriate black fringe to trim with. I found the perfect antique buttons on eBay, but sadly, was outbid by $.50 at the very last second. :( So, I'm still on the lookout for buttons. . .
